Ocala Speedway is getting down and dirty

Ocala Speedway looked different Friday night, and it wasn’t just the dirt on the track. I saw something at Ocala last week that I have never seen at any other short track I’d ever been to.

The grandstands were full. Counting the pit area, more than 5,700 showed up.

It sure looked different than last year’s opening night, when a good crowd of 1,200 came out. Who knows how many fans will show up on a weekly basis out there, but I think the little track in Zuber is heading in the right direction.

Of course, the racing is better too. On opening night, cars ran three-wide around the track in some instances, swapping the lead back and forth. That kind of racing leaves you waiting for next Friday, and now it’s here.

Tonight, it’s the modifieds’ turn to take on the Ocala track. Drivers from all over the state, including Buzzie Reutimann, NASCAR driver David Reutimann’s father, will try to tame the new surface. Throw in classes of hobby stocks, mini stocks and thunder stocks, and tonight’s show could be a dandy.
