Limited Late Models and Sprints Put on Show at Ocala Speedway

April 20, 2002, Ocala, FL – Ocala Speedway held the second of
their monthly Limited Late Model races and the fastest
qualifier, Tom McCann (01) got his second win in the same
series. McCann, Michael Faulk (36) and Robbie Smith (01)
jumped out to a big lead over the remainder of the field
after a Lap 1 caution allowed for a complete restart.
Rounding out the top five was Rob McCalip (44) and Herb
Hoefler (22).

The T.B.A.R.A. Outlaw Winged Sprintswere back after the
racing program at Ocala Speedway was rained out on April
13th. Keith Butler (19) and Sport Allen (88) shared the
front row with Dude Teate (0) and Wayne Reutimann, Jr. (22)
right behind him. A caution on lap 1 sent Bo Harley (3x)
and Matt Mercer (10) to the rear of the field for the
restart. Allen took the lead with Jimmy Alvis (21) and
David Slawiak (79) behind him. Sonny Hartley (32) held
4th place for a handfull of laps before Reutimann, Jr. got
by him and started to pick his way to the front, one by
one. A couple of more laps and Reutimann, Jr. might have
won but it wasn’t to be. Allen took the checkered followed
by Reutimann, Jr., Shane Butler (18), Slawiak, and Keith
Butler (19).

The Steven A. Bagen Sportsman division was next. Michael
Mennenga (16) and Pete Close, Jr. (86) were on the front
row. On lap 1, Close, Jr. made slight contact with
Mennenga while trying to pass on the inside and both drivers
had to pit. Bob Masciarelli (72) who started 7th worked
his way to the front with Frank Buchanan (07) and William
Edwrads (08) in tow. They finished the race in that order
with Mike Wilson (79) and Tom Posavec (01) completing the
top five.

Mark Mitchell (71) drove his Thrifty Nickel Hobby Stock to
a double victory, winning both his heat race and the
feature. Paul Gladdin (9) led the race early but settled
in 2nd place and remained there to the end. Third place
finsiher Moose Alderman (7) didn’t have it as easy. He
started in 9th place and pretty much stayed there until a
couple of late race cautions moved him up a spot or two.
He was in 6th place on the final lap when David Chastain
(17) who was running in 3rd place, Steve West (78) and
Frank Buchanan (07) crashed just short of the start/finish
line and right in front of Alderman who had to go low to
get around them. John Betts (08) finished in 4th followed
by Paul Fletcher (28).

The WTRS Pure Stock division took to the track. J. T.
Schimborski (0) led from flag to flag with lots of
exciting action going on behind him. After Bobby Carter
(99) and Chuck Stewart (8) got by Michael Fiddia (41)
it looked like the race was over. However, with only a
couple of laps to go and Schimborski and Carter way out
in front, Carter tried to make a pass on the inside of
Schimborski going into turn l and spun the leader. Carter
went to the rear of the pack and Schimborski went on to
take the checkered flag followed by Stewart, Rick Hart
(13), Paul Fletcher (94) and Kyle Maynard (72).

The final race of the night was the Coca Cola 4 Cylinder
Bomber division. Steve Gallagher (39) started the race
in the 4th position and dropped back as far as 8th before
beginning his charge to the front. A J. Schreler was
leading the race when a caution came out on lap 7.
Schreier experienced car problems and left the racing
surface. Neal Durbin took over the leaders spot and set
his eyes on the checkered, but Gallagher had other plans.
Galagher passed Durbin on the final lap bringing Ric
Fort (2) and Bill Brezner (19) with him. Durbin settled
for 4th followed by Richard Kuhn (47).
