Thanks to last weekend’s visit from Hurricane Irene, the Last TBARA Points Race for 1999 was rescheduled for tonight. Both the Driver Points and Car Owner Points could not be decided until the Checkered Flag fell on the Feature! This kept both the fans and the teams on edge all evening.
It was a cool Florida evening, but the action was hot and heavy!
The three quick heat races had Larry Tyler in his #99, Paul Madden in the Carpenter #76, and Bo Hartley in the #3X come out winners, making these three eligible for the Barfield Clean Sweep Bonus.
The twelve transferred cars inverted put Paul Madden and Larry Tyler on the front row. Jim Childers, who was a close second in Driver Points, could not get the Riddle #111 to fire for the feature, so he jumped into the Love #77 to try and get some valuable points. Another pre-race casualty was Brad Davis in his #4d, as he lost an engine in hot laps. As the race went green,
Tyler grabbed the early lead with Bo Hartley second. Tyler had the #99 dialed in and was long gone. Points Leader Dude Teate and Dave Steele both started in the sixth row. On lap 10, Tyler had built up almost a half lap lead when Bo Hartley spun, bringing out the yellow. The order on the restart was Larry Tyler, Paul Madden, Kevin Cahill, Joey Aguilar, Dave Steele, Stan Butler, Dude Teate, and Wayne Reutimann. On the restart, Tyler once again ran away from the field. On lap 19 Tyler, whose #99 had built up almost a half lap lead, lost the drive line and was out of the race after giving the fans some super fast racing. During this time, Dave Steele had moved the GMS #91 into second place. Steele took the lead when Tyler dropped out.
The last yellow of the evening flew on lap 21, when Joey Aguilar lost the left front wheel on the #48.The final restart order was Dave Steele, Kevin Cahill, Stan Butler, Dude Teate, and Wayne Reutimann. These four cars really put on a great show as they tried their best to catch the high-flying Steele. As the Checkered Flag fell on the Final race of the 1999 TBARA Tour, Three Cars pulled into Victory Lane. Dave Steele in the GMS #91 for winning the feature, Dude Teate for winning the 1999 TBARA Driver Championship, and The Heckman Motorsports #22 for winning the 1999 TBARA Car Owner Championship. Also, the driver of the Heckman Motorsports #22, Wayne Reutimann finished a close second in the Drivers Points. A great year for that team! Needless to say, plenty of celebrating was going on all over!!!!
